Career Coaching Columns

Building a resilient career that you love and that sustains you over decades of professional participation absolutely can be done - with the help of smart friends, supportive colleagues willing to share their insider tips, the insights of some great coaching books, and some savvy ideas for getting from here to there.

That's what I've tried to share in these column and articles. I've had one of those highly eclectic careers - armed with my trusty MLIS skill set, I've worked in publishing (copywriter and copy editor, acquisitions and managing editor, manuscript evaluator, author); corporations (executive information advisor, CEO ghostwriter for articles/books/speeches, business researcher), start-ups (created the first virtual academic library, created an online resource/community for people with disabilities), academia (interim director of an MLIS program, adjunct faculty), nonprofits (helped create the information center for a national industry association), and taken the independent path (my company, Dority & Associates, has done information project work for various for-profit and nonprofit clients for the past ten years).

The career advice found in the following columns and articles comes from personal experiences as well as those of my LIS friends, colleagues, and students. Together we have found that crafting a career as an information professional can be rewarding in every sense of the word - and I hope the advice offered here helps you toward the same discovery - and opportunity.
